The Cinema Museum is located in Kennington, close to the Elephant and Castle, in the former Lambeth Workhouse. Its collection was founded in 1986 by Ronald Grant and Martin Humphries, from their own private collection of cinema history and memorabilia. Its current building was once the workhouse where Charlie Chaplin lived as a child.
The City Adventurers took a trip there and discovered a lot of interesting facts about the cinemas of days gone by. We got to see items ranging from old movie projectors, category boards indicating former film classifications, usher uniforms and so much more. Upstairs, in the former workhouse chapel, there is now an auditorium, a book shop and a small cafe.
The museum is open to the public on certain days and hosts periodic film shows. We were lucky to be part of a private guided tour by one of the founders, Martin Humphries. Over complimentary tea and biscuits we were able to meet the other founder, Ronald Grant, for some additional Q&A. The session was very informative and included personal anecdotes related to cinema going and working in film projection.
